ABOUT THE SPEAKERS:
PROPOSITION
Professor A.C. Grayling
A. C. Grayling is the Master of the New College of the Humanities, London, and its Professor of Philosophy. He is the author of over thirty books of philosophy, biography, history of ideas, and essays. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature, a Vice President of the British Humanist Association, Patron of the UK Armed Forces Humanist Association, Honorary Associate of the Secular Society, and a Patron of Dignity in Dying.

Helen Mountfeld QC
Helen Mountfeld is a QC at Matrix Chambers, and in 2015 was on the shortlist for the Legal 500’s ‘Administrative & Public Law Silk of the Year’. Helen is particularly well known for cases concerning discrimination and equality questions as they arise in public law, employment, commercial and other contexts. She argued the winning case for Gina Miller in Miller v Secretary of State for Exiting the EU [2017]. She is the Principal of Mansfeld College, Oxford.

OPPOSITION
The Right Honourable Lord Jonathan Sumption
Jonathan Sumption was a Justice of the UK Supreme Court between 2012 and 2018. He spoke on ‘Law and the Decline of Politics’ for the 2019 BBC Reith Lectures, a series of annual lectures the first of which was delivered by Bertrand Russell in 1948. He is also known for writing a substantial narrative history of the Hundred Years’ War, so far in four volumes.

Lord Anthony Grabiner QC
Tony Grabiner has been the Master of Clare College since 2014. He practises as a commercial law barrister at One Essex Court. He was made a life peer in 1999, then taking the Labour whip. He has since left the Labour Party and now sits on the cross benches.
