Why Kano started training and how he found a teacher (Reading)

Jigoro Kano (1860-1938) founded Judo in 1882 and taught his form of jiujitsu to students that spread the art around the world and inspired other developments, including Sambo and jiujitsu in Brazil.

Kano was born at a time of fast modernisation. As a teenager, Kano began searching for a jiujitsu teacher despite the art being seen as relevant to the past warring lords and samurai of feudal Japan.

This video - read directly from parts of Kano's book "Judo Memoirs of Jigoro Kano" - explains why he wanted to learn jiujitsu in the modernising city of Tokyo and how he eventually found a teacher.
