Vaterländischer Marsch [Austrian march]

Composed by the brothers Strauss.

The work was created against the background of the Sardinian War between Austria and Sardinia, which was led by France under Napoleon III. was supported. Vienna was concerned about the outcome of the armed forces. As is often the case in such situations, patriotic events were held. One of these events took place on May 9, 1859 in the Zum Sperl dance hall. The brothers Johann and Josef Strauss used the opportunity for a joint composition. The result was the Patriotic March. In the piece of music, patriotic songs and marches were quoted and interwoven. Among them were the Radetzky March by Johann Strauss (father), the Rákóczi March from Hungary and of course the Austrian imperial anthem by Joseph Haydn. Despite the initial exuberant enthusiasm, this march was not as successful in the long term as the two composers might have imagined. It did not come close to the popularity of the Radetzky March.
