Can you use SCRs as diodes?

Can a Silicon Controlled Rectifier (SCR) perform the job of an ordinary rectifier diode, or is it a case of "sorry, it doesn't work like that"?

NOTE: when testing my SCRs I didn't need a resistor for the gate. That doesn't mean you don't need one with yours! If in doubt, use a variable one and measure the current, you can always remove it if you find it's not needed.
