Monster Sunspot Faces Earth After Massive Solar Flares

Sunspot AR4366 is the most active sunspot of Solar Cycle 25, and it just rotated into a direct Earth-facing position.

In the past 48 hours, AR4366 has produced:
- 6 X-class solar flares (including X8.3, the strongest of 2026)
- 20+ M-class flares
- Widespread radio blackouts across the South Pacific
- X8.1 CME arrived a couple of hours after I filmed the video
- X4.2 CME still on the way!
- A CME heading toward Earth (arriving ~Feb 5)

The sunspot is 10 times wider than Earth and has an unstable "delta-class" magnetic field that makes more eruptions likely. NOAA forecasters predict a 40% chance of additional X-class flares in the next 48 hours.

AR4366 is comparable in size to the sunspot that caused the Carrington Event of 1859 — the most powerful geomagnetic storm ever recorded, which damaged telegraph systems worldwide.

A glancing blow from the Feb 1 CME is expected on Feb 5-6, possibly bringing G1 (minor) geomagnetic storms and auroras at high to mid-latitudes.

This is developing space weather — I'll post updates as the situation evolves.

Current Status: ACTIVE - Feb 3, 2026
Next Major Risk Window: Feb 4-6, 2026
Aurora Potential: Moderate to High (Feb 5-6)
