1968-69 Television Season 50th Anniversary: The Land of the Giants

Having spent some time looking back at westerns on television in the 1968-1969 television season, let's now take a look back at sci-fi programming on television during the 1968-1969 season.

One of television finest producers in this mid-late 1960s period was Irwin Allen. He had had great success with his two prior series, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1964-1968) and Lost In Space (1965-1968), and some success with his single season project, The Time Tunnel (1966-1967). However, by the fall of 1968, all three of those series had run their course, but Irwin had another interesting idea up his sleeve... 'The Land of the Giants.'

As this video (and host June Lockhart in the mid-1990s) describes, The Land of the Giants was in many ways, a triumph, not just in story telling, but in production and special effects as well. A series about miniaturized people in a space ship (think Fantastic Voyage) meeting Paul Bunyan-like people (think Gulliver's Travel). A cool idea, executed to perfection.

The series ran two seasons on ABC, and was an early Sunday night primetime favorite of the youngsters. It helped introduced a wonderful set of television stars to the viewing public and gave Irwin Allen a nice four-for-four success rate on television, and certainly in the off-network syndication market for years, and decades to come.
