Tourism Minister blasts premiers planning to keep borders closed

Premiers who refuse to open their borders despite dropping COVID-19 case numbers will be “answerable to their tourism industry”.

These are the words of Tourism Minister Simon Birmingham who has for the first time publicly weighed into the feud between state leaders who are refusing to open their borders and shed light on the rift forming between each state’s approach to economic recovery.

“I expect that if the successful suppression of COVID continues then the states should be relaxing their border controls,” Mr Birmingham exclusively told Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell.

“If one or two states were to hold out they will be answerable to their tourism industry and will need to provide additional support to that industry.”

The sensational comments came after Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk suggested she would keep her borders shut until September.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has also raised concerns people from NSW could visit New Zealand before Brisbane.

Mr Clennell also revealed the Qld Government wants to enter into talks with WA, South Australia and the NT concerning a possible COVID-safe travel bubble between those states.

NSW and Victoria would be excluded from this deal.
