The Revd Dr Rowan Williams tells the story of this amazing woman, who, scandalised her fellow nuns by drinking beer and smoking Gauloises. In offering Jews in Paris the safety of Orthodox faith membership, Maria Skobtsova not only defied the Nazis but resembled Christ most, by treating the hungry and oppressed not with charity, but as she would Jesus himself.

Mother Maria offers us a model of faithful discipleship that does not shy away from the possibility of martyrdom.
