Do I Want My Son To Be An ELECTRICIAN?

There are some electricians out there who don't want their kids to become electricians and some that do. I've got my opinion so pitter-patter let's get atter.

The first time I'd heard an old guy talk about this was many years ago and he's said it multiple times since I've known him. "I don't ever want my kids to have to do this work." There was almost regret in his voice for HE HIMSELF doing this work for 30 years. He said that he didn't want them to suffer the back pains, knee pains, constant working your butt off and sweating to earn a paycheck. He'd rather them get a degree and be able to make more money doing something "cush."

The next time I'd heard an old guy talk about this was far later in my career. He said "I'm so damn proud of my boys, they've both decided they want to follow in their dad's footsteps and become electricians." This man had an obvious sense of pride in what he does for a living, so much so that he wants his kids to experience it as well. This stuck with me.

What do I want for my son? Neither. I want him to find himself, follow his own path, make his own mistakes, and not try to live for what somebody else wants him to do or be. If he wants to try this trade out I'd be so incredibly happy to teach him, but if he doesn't want anything to do with it then I'm cool with that too. It's his life, I don't need him to do anything for me to feel like I'm a good dad. His decisions are on him, and to be honest I hope he struggles. I hope he knows what it's like to not be able to pay your bills and have to figure out what to do to keep the lights on. I hope he knows heartbreak, anger, sadness, fear, and frustration. Because then he will appreciate love, joy, happiness, confidence, and patience. You can't appreciate the sweet without the bitter.
