Getting older PC games running is somewhat of a hassle, though I suppose that’s the price you have to pay for a free game. I originally Downloaded Dos box, but after fiddling with it for the better part of an hour, I scrapped it and just run the programme in compatibility mode for Windows 98 and it worked fine. Hopefully if your interested, you should have just as much success as I did. There are a number of graphical glitches I found, especially when double clicking on things so be aware of that.

Chaos Island seems to have largely been forgotten in the annuals of history. I have fond memories of going over to my aunties when I was just a wee lad and needed babysitting. The only thing she had on her laptop was this game and some kind of safari park building sim which I am still searching for. When the Lost World – Jurassic Park came out, apparently there was a clause in it that stated the actors had to lend their voices to this game, meaning it actually has great voice acting from the original cast, including the late and great Richard Attenborough.

The game itself is a lot easier than I remember. I mean, I was able to beat it when I was like 3 years old, so It couldn’t have been that difficult, I guess. You can try to challenge yourself by getting more points. The more points you use at the start of the mission, the fewer you will be awarded at it’s conclusion. The only way to maximise this is just picking a single research assistant at the start of ever mission. Whilst technically possible to beat this way, some missions were just too much of a hassle and would rely on RNG to win this way. Most missions can be won easy enough with just a research assistant however.

In addition to this you get points for killing hunter units (but not wild dinosaurs), and for how many eggs you have stock piled. This means the optimum way to play is to collect every egg and hatch the fewest but strongest dinosaurs possible. Points don’t really mean anything, nor do they unlock anything but it’s something you can work towards if interested.

The 5 main characters can be upgraded with equipment, but this increases their starting price considerably. It’s entirely possible to complete the game without upgrading your team (aside from one objective in mission 4), and keep their costs down. This was actually what I did in my first playthrough of this, as a few stat increases here and there do not justify a unit costing 4 times as much. In the end I just upgraded them however, to try and show off the difference in their power level from start to finish.

I’ve included the Bio’s of the characters and the dinosaurs at the end of the game for those interested. With this game being quite old (and some of the facts being straight up wrong even in 1997), please bear in mind that some of the information they say about the dinosaurs is not correct, so don’t go quoting it to your friend without doing research or you will end up looking like an arse.
