Time Check Short1B by Peter Meluso
Time Check is a signature high-energy jazz standard for the Buddy Rich Band. It was written and arranged by tenor saxophonist Don Menza in 1973.
The studio version was recorded for the album The Roar of '74, released under the Groove Merchant label and it is the one Covered in this Short and the full Cover.
The arrangement is known for its time signature switching featuring swinging sections in 4/4 that sound and feel 6/8 time due to several triplet figures on the transitions. It typically includes prominent solos for tenor saxophone and guitar.
It hits a burning pace as Buddy and the band often did at around a 275 BPM tempo.
In subsequent performances, Buddy often played versions of this tune live that included lengthy solos. It was a part of the Band’s book for years.
This is a great study for up tempo Big Band playing as Buddy drives the band using a direct and simple pulse, and then pops some great triplet 6/8 like phrases as the chart explodes.
Thanks for watching. Next week check out the full version.
