It is later september and quite early in the morning. On todays program we have the first koi harvest of the season at the Shintaro Koi Farm back in Japan. Today is een exciting day for the koi breeder. Growing a particular variety is not an easy job. Sometime it takes years for a breeder to find the perfect combination between parent koi and bloodlines.
But there are other factors that ensure that the koi grows best in this place in Japan. Weather. High humidity and temperatures are important in the development of these fish. In the summer, temperatures can reach around 40 degrees.
The net is now closing around the one-year-old Koi. The fish are caught carefully and with the utmost precision.
During the growing season, the growers visit their mud ponds every day. They not only check the feeding machines, but also the health of the fish and the water.
Finally there is the result of waiting 4 months. The first glimpse of the new crop.
When the posts have been placed around the net, the first results can be viewed.
I want to use the moment to ask if you want to subscribe to our channel. More than half of our viewers have not yet subscribed. Join the largest Koi family on Youtube today.
Back at the Koi house! Selection has now started. Masaru looks carefully in which category the Koi are classified.
One by one and one by one the fish are judged. A time-consuming but important job.
In the previous episodes of the Shintaro Koi Farm you have seen how the fish are selected before they enter the mud pond. Here the breeder determines what value the fish will receive and whether he sells or keeps them. In case you missed our previous episodes, check the end of this video for links to the previous episodes.
The main varieties are Sanke and Tancho Sanke, which have emerged from this mud pond.
A Taisho Sanshoku (Sanke for short) is a white Koi with red (hi) and black (sumi) patterns. While "Taisho" refers to the era in which the Sanke originated, namely the Taisho period (1912-1926), "Sanke" literally means "three colors." The colors white, black and red.
Now that all Koi have been selected, it is up to the breeder to determine which Koi he wants to keep. Keeping and growing his best fish costs money but also space. And let the latter be very expensive now.
That is why it is the job of the breeder to determine which fish actually have the potential to stay on the Koi Farm for another year. The best must be distinguished from the best. A breeder must be fairly certain that a Koi really has a good future, so it is worthwhile to keep it for another year.
Koi with slight doubt can still have a chance, but more doubt is not allowed. The Koi that are allowed to join the mud pond are the real best, we can label as “Tategoi”. The survivors, which are certainly not bad Koi, are the Tateshita.
Tategoi can be translated to “Koi for the future”. For example Koi which have not yet been fully developed, but according to the breeder have a bright future ahead.
It is time to transfer the first koi to the brand new koi house.
The koi look super healthy and have had a good growing season. Now is the time for rest and they will wait here for what the future brings them.
