In her second week back training as a Maternity Care Assistant, Emma tests what she’s learned so far in the birthing unit and operating theater...

As part of her course, Emma receives a two-inch-thick folder of work which she needs to complete, requiring homework and handwritten tests. If she finishes it all, Emma will become a fully qualified maternity care assistant. But self-doubt comes nagging and she worries about the challenge ahead of her.

On shift in the birthing unit, Emma meets Sara and Jake, a newly-wed couple in labor with their first baby. After twenty two hours of contractions, midwife Naghmeh breaks Sara’s waters, but discovers something worrying. The couple are moved to the labor ward so Mum and baby can be monitored. Then after 36 hours of labor, the midwife team cheer-lead Sara for the final pushes…

MCAs have a multi-skilled role, which includes assisting in theater, where Emma’s learning the ropes. She helps prep for an elective caesarean section. In the coming weeks Emma will be expected to carry out the role on her own. The pressure is on!
