A look at three couples who are about to give birth to their first baby. Swindon, Wiltshire. Interviews with the couples about their fears and expectations of giving birth and raising a baby 1970's

Woman says she did not think the baby was real until she felt it move.
Man says he and his wife have both been irritable with each other.
Woman says she is apprehensive and she does not know what to expect.
Woman is 11 days overdue. Doctor examines her and suggests the induce the labour.
Man says there are a lot of old wives tales about pregnancy and birth and that he does not know what to expect.
Woman says her emotions have been ragged and she has been crying at work.
Ultrasound on woman's tummy, stretch marks visible.
Suburban house with roses in the front garden.
Woman says she knows giving birth is going to hurt.
Woman suffers contractions. Goes to hospital. Her husband is nervous and is in the ward or delivery room with her.
Other couple, father helps deliver the baby. Very graphic images of a baby being born, leaves nothing to the imagination (not for those of weak stomach).

Another woman gives birth. Father present. Nurse talks mother through her breathing exercises. Baby born covered in blood. Nurse cuts the umbilical cord.
Third woman in labour. View of the baby's head (again very graphic). Woman screams with pain. Baby born. Afterwards she is breast feeding the child.
