Needless to say, growing up near the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee and having a nuclear physicist as a parent certainly influenced Dr. Maienschein's choice to become a scientist. She hasn't taken a standard teaching approach though, as her first course offerings merged engineering and humanities which eventually gave way to classes that taught the histories of science, biology and medicine. Ultimately, Dr. Maienschein believes that her experimentation in education is all about promoting discovery and really learning to think critically about the world. In 2007, she received the President's Professor award, which is among the highest honors for faculty excellence.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
