Why Europe's only primeval forest causes tensions | VPRO Documentary

The only remaining primeval forest in Europe is in Poland. Also, the tensions around this primeval forest have risen sharply in recent years. How does Europe's only primeval forest look and why are there tensions rising about this primeval forest? In this episode, Dore travels from her family home in Oświęcim to Bialowieza in eastern Poland. To speak with different interest groups and find out where that tension comes from.

A quarter of a million Poles live in the Netherlands. Dutch-Polish journalist Dore van Duivenbode is one of them. In this series, she travels back to her motherland, where she visits her family house near Oświęcim, former Auschwitz. In Bialowieza, in eastern Poland, she tries to find out why a forest is causing much tension. In Warsaw, she gets deeper into the hot topic of abortion. Here strong supporters and opponents are giving their perspective. Her travels bring her also to North Poland, where she meets a low-income family and talks with the famous and notorious opposition judge Igor Tuleya. A travel series about Poland, a country that is more and more divided and cursed by its geography location.

The forester's school that Dore visits have been taking care of the protection of the primeval forest for years. The school and its students manage the forest in such a way, whereby intervention in nature plays an important role. But not everyone agrees. How do the residents of Bialowieza and environmentalists think about it?

On her travel, Dore also visits the small village of Jezowe in eastern Poland. She meets mayor Marek Stępak from the party PiS, who talks about the hope that the PiS party has given him for east Poland. According to him, investments are going to be made in the east of the country. Something important has recently been built along Jezowe that demonstrates that progress. Marek would love to show that to Dore before they sit down at the dinner table with his family for the All Saints' dinner.
