This is the partial broadcast of the PBS show The Nightly Business Report from June 16, 1986 hosted by Dean Shepherd, Linda O'Bryon, and Paul Kangas. It was recorded from WDCN PBS channel 8 in Nashville Tennessee.

Tonight's stories:
U.S. Economic Indicators--
The Federal Reserve reports a drop in industrial capacity usage (down to 78.6% in May from 79.2% in April), driven mostly by lower auto production. Only aerospace and transportation equipment industries show increased factory usage. There is broader concern about overall economic weakness.

South Africa Protests and Sanctions--
On the 10th anniversary of the Soweto uprising, protesters—including members of Congress—call for stronger measures against apartheid, urging U.S. companies to either engage in civil disobedience or exit South Africa. The Bank of America ceases new loans to South African borrowers as part of its own protest.

Financial Markets and Wall Street--
The Dow industrials fluctuate, ultimately closing about two points lower after an initially positive start. Trading volume is relatively light, with investors hesitant ahead of looming events, including possible changes to the Gramm-Rudman deficit-reduction law and the upcoming triple expiration of futures and options.

Bond prices rise somewhat on signs of a weakening economy (lower capacity utilization), suggesting the possibility of lower interest rates.
Precious metals (gold and silver) drop sharply, and the dollar finishes mostly higher against major currencies.

Labor and Corporate News--
A strike by 7,500 Weyerhaeuser workers in the Pacific Northwest spotlights tensions over wage and benefit cuts. Analysts believe the company may have the upper hand due to high regional unemployment.
Coca-Cola reaches a deal to acquire certain bottling operations, boosting its share of self-bottled products. Talks to purchase another large bottler have ended.

IBM unveils new mid-range computer products (System 36 and 38 models), emphasizing better connectivity across its product lines.
Healthcare Cost Initiative in Silicon Valley

Several tech firms (including Apple and Lockheed) partner through the American Electronics Association to pool health-cost data and negotiate discounts with local hospitals and doctors. The aim is to lower employee healthcare expenses by potentially 15–25%, demonstrating a new industry-wide approach to controlling medical costs.

This sequence was upscaled to 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second.
