Situated 48km from the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand in the Bay of Plenty. Whakaari's eruptions have produced lava flows and explosive eruptions. New Zealand's only active marine volcano attracts scientists and volcanologists as well as hundreds of tourists.
On 5th of August 2012 a minor eruption occurred sending ash into the air.
Captain Cook named it White island on October 1st 1769 but failed to notice that it was a volcano.
Attempts were made to mine sulphur in the 1800's and 1913 - 1914 but was halted when 10 workers were killed when part of the western crater rim collapsed creating a lahar. They were never to be found.
Before the days of antibiotics sulphur was used in medicines, making match heads and sterilising wine corks. Was also used as a component of agricultural fertiliser.
The remains of the old miners buildings still remain there, though much has been corroded by sulphuric gases.
White island is also a breeding colony of about 3000 pairs of Australasian Gannets.
It is also a well known destination for fishing boats, targeting species like Yellowtail kingfish, hapuka, bluenose, black and striped marlin and yellowfin tuna.

Ile blanche est également une colonie de reproduction d'environ 3000 paires de Australasian Bassan. C'est également une destination bien connue des bateaux de pêche, ciblant des espèces comme kingfish limande à queue jaune, hapuka, Le bluenose, noir et marlin rayé et le thon à nageoire jaune.
