Breville 870XL Pump Replacement, Part 1
Replacing the water pump and safety valve in the Breville Barista Express.
Ideally this would have been done at the same time as the solenoid valve replacement. But the pump I had on order with ereplacementparts.com never arrived. So I located a new pump and valve on Amazon, links below, after I noticed I still had pressure issues with the machine.
The brewing pressure has been steadily falling and it also gets into a mode where the pressure will rise up to a point then fall and rise in a repeating cycle. The machine has always done this on and off over the years, but it recently got worse a month or two after replacing the solenoid valves. I think this is related. The new valves seal up much tighter than the old valves resulting in higher internal pressures. This in turn is letting the underlying pressure issue, that has been there all along, show up all the time.
I'm not sure if it's the pump or the safety valve causing the problem. From what I can tell, there's no active pressure regulation in the machine. That is, there's no pressure sensor, aside from the analog gauge on the face of the machine, and no feedback to the controller. This is why it's so critical to get the coffee grind and tamping just right to achieve the proper extraction pressure. There's only a pressure relief valve that opens if the internal pressure exceeds some preset limit above normal operating pressure.
Tried a new way to open the back of the machine that works a lot better. Cut the tie wrap on the hose that attaches to the tank valve and pull that end off the hose barb. Then just be sure to loosely fit tie wraps (4 in all) to all the hose ends removed before putting everything back together.

Note the "2/1" is the duty cycle, 2 minutes on / 1 minute off (to cool). Be careful when running descaling cycles, it's easy to get carried away and run the pump too many times in a row to clean or flush the machine. I usually will do 2 long presses in a row on the 1-cup button, gives around 20-30 secs. of water each one. Then, I'll let the machine sit for a minute or two before repeating.
