The door shuts and locks behind you and you finally can breathe. It’s hard to believe it was only a few days ago a young amnesiac paid you ten thousand dollars to drive him to Paris. It was stupid. A stranger pays you a large sum of money–in cash upfront–to drive him alone to his house. You should have known better, but you were desperate.
Now you’re on the run because whoever is chasing Bourne has your picture, your life, and is after you, too. Your fingers comb through your rain-soaked, newly chopped and dyed hair. This is your life now.
You shrug off your bag with the few possessions you took from your car and let it thump on the floor. Grabbing your most comfortable clothes, you rush to the bathroom and work through your routine as quickly as possible, eager for the long-awaited rest.
You exit five minutes later to find Jason sitting on the floor at the foot of the bed. Blue eyes stare into nothing, head tilted as he listens. He snaps out of it to look at you. A soft, almost awkward smile tugs at his lips.
“I’ll sleep on the floor,” he says, laying back on the rug before you could protest.
It’s cold and the hotel provides little heat. You could have met anyone when you accepted that ten thousand dollars. You were lucky enough to meet a gentleman.
A gentleman tormented by a past he can’t remember. Ever since you’ve known Jason, he’s been determined, eager to figure out who he is. Today, he seems… defeated, lost, confused. You wonder if he remembered something. You leave him to his thoughts as you crawl into bed, wishing there was more you could do. You whisper goodnight and it’s answered by silence.
Running water through a faucet draws you to wakefulness. You blink away the heavy drowsiness and throw the sheets aside. You make your presence known as you approach the bathroom. Jason is leaning over the sink, knuckles turning white around the porcelain. Sweat pours off of his shaking frame.
He looks at you through the mirror and your heart aches for the anguish you see.
“Jason…”
“I don’t want to know who I am anymore.”
His whispers are broken, raw. You step closer and touch his shoulder. The muscles twitch beneath your cold fingers, but he doesn’t pull away.
“I don’t care. I don’t want to know.”
“Come back to bed. We’ll–”
“Everything I found out. I want to forget.”
“It’s okay.”
“I don’t care who I am or what I did.”
“It’s okay,” you repeat helplessly, unable to find the magic words to take his pain away.
Jason turns to you, expression sharp with a sudden idea. “We have the money. We can hide. Could we do that? Is there any chance you can do that?”
Warmth floods your chilled body. 'We'. For a moment, you fantasize the idea. It wouldn’t be much different from now. You would be constantly on the run. No home, no place to stay. More drafty hotel rooms like this one. Always looking over your shoulder, always listening, always watching. Good thing you were a wandering spirit, never settling in one place for long. It would be difficult, but you would have him.
“Maybe,” you say instead, kissing his cheek. “Come back to bed. You need sleep.”
He lets you lead him back into the room. He pauses before the rug on the floor, so you nudge him to the bed. You both crawl in, the small space forcing you together. It was not unlike another hotel room in Paris on another cold night, yet also so different.
You switch on the radio on your nightstand and let classical music fill the room. Immediately, Jason leans over and tries to turn it off.
“The music. I can’t hear–”
“Shhh,” you soothe him as you turn the volume down to the lowest setting. “It’s okay. I’ll turn it off once you’re asleep. Just relax.”
You rub circles around his back and eventually you see the tension leave his body. A few moments later, you hear his soft, deep breaths of sleep. You listen, comforted by it.
This is your life now.
