Coinola Midget plays “Dominique the Singing Nun”

This Coinola Midget was restored in 1974 and as part of the restoration, a new cabinet was built salvaging the stained glass and other decorative elements from the original deteriorated cabinet. Unfortunately, as was popular during that time, Perflex polyurethane pouches were used and of course failed rendering the piano unplayable. Also the violin pipes had become lost sometime prior to the restoration so it had only the flute pipes.

It came to my shop for a major restoration. The exterior finish from 1974 was retained as well as the hammers that had been installed at that time. A large crack in the soundboard had developed since 1974 with significant separation from the ribs and the only way to repair it was to remove the cast iron plate.

The work I did included repairing and refinishing the soundboard, regilding the plate, restringing, new dampers, piano action repair and regulation, restore and regulate the mandolin attachment, and a full pneumatic rebuild. The owner had a spare set of metal violin pipes from a Reproduco which I sent to a metal pipe builder to shorten the feet and miter the three lowest pipes to fit inside the cabinet.
