He's an American software engineer, a businessperson, and the Executive Chairman of Alphabet, Inc.

From 2001 to 2011, Schmidt served as the CEO of Google.

In 2016, Forbes ranked Schmidt as the 100th-richest person in the world, with an estimated wealth of US$10.8 billion.

1. Keep pushing
He attended Princeton University, where he started as an architecture major but then switched and earned a B.S. degree in electrical engineering.

2. Align with smart people
He earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of California, Berkeley.

3. Dream bigger
Early in his career, he held a series of technical positions with IT companies.

4. Hire interesting people
During his summers at Bell Labs, he and Mike Lesk wrote Lex, a program that generates lexical-analyzers from regular-expression descriptions.

5. Have a 5 year plan
In 1983, he joined Sun Microsystems as its first software manager.

6. Spend your money wisely
In April 1997, he became the CEO and chairman of the board of Novell.

7. Don't narrow your focus
In March 2001, he joined Google's board of directors as chairman, and became the company's CEO in August 2001.

8. Find a coach
In 2007, PC World ranked Schmidt as the first on its list of the 50 most important people on the Web.

9. Help your customers be successful
On 28 August 2006, he was elected to Apple Inc.'s board of directors.

10. Have strong shared values
He taught at Stanford Graduate School of Business in the 2000s.
