The Eduard Bohlen – A Shipwreck in the Sands of Time
On the desolate shores of Namibia’s Skeleton Coast lies one of the world’s most haunting maritime relics: the wreck of the Eduard Bohlen. Once a proud German cargo ship plying the colonial trade routes of South West Africa, this steel vessel now rests inexplicably in the middle of the desert—over 400 metres from the ocean it once sailed.

Launched in 1890 by the renowned Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg, she was a workhorse of her time—serving routes from Germany to the African colonies. But on 5th September 1909, while en route from Swakopmund to Table Bay, the vessel encountered dense fog off Conception Bay. Disoriented and unable to navigate in near-zero visibility, she ran aground and was claimed by the Skeleton Coast.
Over the decades, the sea receded and the desert advanced, leaving the wreck eerily marooned in a sea of sand.
