Hoober Stand: Wentworth’s Monument to Power

Why would a grand tower in Yorkshire commemorate the defeat of a rebellion that never reached this far south?

Hoober Stand was built by the Watson-Wentworth family after the 1745 Jacobite uprising—not to honour the conflict, but to celebrate their loyalty to the Hanoverian Crown. From its commanding hilltop position above the Wentworth estate, this striking triangular tower was designed to be seen.

It’s part of a larger network of monuments across the estate, including the Needle’s Eye and Keppel’s Column—a display of wealth, power, and political influence in stone.

🎥 Filmed on location with drone footage revealing Hoober Stand’s unusual architecture and strategic placement.

📍 Location: Hoober Stand, South Yorkshire, England
📚 Period: Georgian (Mid-18th century)
🏛 Built: 1747–1748
