Life inside the beehive: Mat Welch at TEDxPerth

Bees are essential to our life, but how much do we know about them? When we see a bee, do we imagine an animal that might harm us, or one that is helping to feed us?

Dr Mat Welch goes inside the beehive to explore what life is like for the honeybee. Using stunning imagery from the "More Than Honey" documentary, Mat discusses how research is starting to understand how to combat the worldwide deterioration of bee colonies.
Dr Mat Welch is a research fellow at the Centre for Integrative Bee Research (CIBER) at UWA, researching honey bee genetics, reproduction and immunity. Dr Welch aims to give an insight into the fascinating world of honeybee society where no one gives orders and yet everyone obeys.

This talk uses content from the documentary "More Than Honey" for which CIBER staff were official scientific advisors for the film. Content from the film is used with permission. To find out more about the film, visit http://morethanhoneyfilm.com

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
