LASIK and Raindrop Near Vision Inlay Performed in Same Eye

I performed both LASIK and the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay to this patient's right eye and then performed LASIK only to the left eye. This patient wanted to improve distance vision (hence the LASIK) and also suffered from presbyopia (the Raindrop Near Vision Inlay is a treatment for near vision loss).

LASIK was performed on the right eye just after the corneal flap was created. The flap "hinge" is always on the side of the eye closest to the nose.

The excimer laser is used for the corneal ablation which reshapes the cornea and changes the focusing power of the eye. After the corneal ablation was completed, look for a very small round disc placed in the center of the cornea.

The Raindrop inlay is 2 mm and clear as it is composed mostly of water. We use a bright yellow dye called fluorescein to help visualize the inlay during the procedure. The dye is completely safe to the eye and will not harm the inlay.

After the Raindrop inlay is centered, the corneal flap is repositioned just as with any other LASIK case.

As you will see, the left eye had only LASIK performed. The corneal flap and corneal ablation were performed in the standard fashion. No Raindrop was inserted.

The Raindrop Near Vision Inlay is only placed in the non-dominant eye.
