NATO jets deployed in Bulgaria amid Ukraine tension
(17 Feb 2022) Spain sent four fighter jets to Bulgaria for joint air patrol missions as part of NATO's efforts to bolster the defenses of the alliance's eastern flank amid tensions over a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Four Eurofighter EF-2000 Typhoon II aircraft of the Spanish Air Force landed earlier this week at the Graf Ignatievo Air Base in central Bulgaria.
Through the end of March, 130 Spanish service members will be executing enhanced air policing assignments and practicing air-to-air manoeuvres with their Bulgarian allies.
Spain made a firm commitment and a determined contribution to the alliance by participating in the air policing mission to protect and safeguard NATO member countries' airspace, the unit's commando announced upon arrival.
The mission, which officially started Thursday, will be carried out in compliance with the plans and procedures of the NATO Integrated Air and Missile Defence System (NIAMDS).
Thursday's event was attended by top ranking military officials from Bulgaria, Spain and NATO.
