The History of Yakult : The Story of the Drink that Dominated Asia
After Netflix's "To All The Boys I've Loved Before" sparked a Yakult craze - you're probably wondering what Yakult is, why it's one of the most popular drinks in Asia, and how Yakult started.
Around 1900-1920, people in Japan were getting ill. Among the causes of death of the poverty-stricken population was dysentery, a digestive system-related infection due to poor hygiene and nutritional deficiencies.
Determined to find a way to beat the diseases that are taking such a toll on the nation, Dr. Shirota began conducting research on micro-organisms in the hopes of developing some sort of preventive medicine.
Eventually, it led him to discover good bacteria that fought off bad bacteria causing typhus and dysentery. In 1930, Dr. Shirota receives his doctorate in medicine, after he managed to successfully culture and strengthen a strain of lactic acid bacteria.
It was a remarkable achievement since this bacteria could survive the journey to the intestines alive, eventually leading to a healthier stomach. This would give people a bigger chance of fighting off illnesses that were ravaging the population.
Rightly so, this bacteria was named the Lactobacillus casei Shirota.
By 1935, the first bottle of Yakult was produced. Today, Yakult is still known as a source of good bacteria and is positioned as a healthy and delicious drink. 40 million bottles of Yakult are consumed every single day.
