U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, USCIS announced, it is testing a new way to calculate processing times for immigration forms, including visa, employment authorization, green card and naturalization applications.
“With this method, we can post processing times that are more accurate, timely, and easier to understand,” the agency wrote on its website.
The move comes, as the Biden administration struggles with a huge backlog of nearly 2.6 million visa applications, some are documentarily qualified and ready for interviews. Backlogs in some visa categories are 50 to 100 times higher, than they were four years ago at the start of the Trump presidency.
State Department scheduled 22,856 family-preference visa interviews worldwide. This past January, it scheduled only 262, a drop of nearly 99%.
The State Department also said that "backlog numbers will continue to fluctuate", due to hiring freeze on consular officers.
House and Senate Democrats have proposed a budget that would let the State Department hire about 1,200 new Foreign Service officers, including consular officers.
in a policy reversal announced Thursday, it will now let people seeking immigrant and fiancee visas go ahead and apply. Secretary of State Antony Blinken determined that "it is in the national interest" to exempt those applicants from the restrictions. Biden administration is still reviewing or hasn't fully reversed some measures that blocks or slow down immigration case processing.

USCIS has not planned to roll out this for all the forms, instead they are testing the new method with the following forms.

Form I-751.
Form I-765.
Form I-102.
Form I-526.
Form I-817.
Form I-824.
Form I-829.
Form I-914.
Form I-924.
Form N-600.
Form N-600K.
