Mumbai woke up to mayhem as the southwest monsoon arrived 10 days early, drenching the city with record-breaking rain. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert after Colaba recorded a staggering 295 mm of rainfall—breaking a 107-year-old record from 1918.

Major city areas like Dadar TT, Hindmata, Saki Naka, and Worli were flooded, halting traffic and submerging vehicles. Nariman Point logged the highest rainfall at 252 mm between midnight and 11 am. Other areas like Byculla and Do Taki crossed 200 mm.

The IMD upgraded alerts from yellow to red for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri, forecasting extremely heavy rain, gusty winds, and thunderstorms.

This is the earliest monsoon onset in 35 years, even earlier than 1990. In Raigad, a house collapsed due to the downpour, injuring one person.
