Piano prodigy Kousei Arima dominated the competition and has become famous among child musicians. After his mother, who was also his instructor, died, he had a mental breakdown while performing at a piano recital at the age of eleven. As a result, he is no longer able to hear the sound of his piano even though his hearing is perfectly fine. Two years later, Kousei hasn't touched the piano and views the world in monotone, without any flair or color. He has resigned himself to living out his life with his good friends, Tsubaki and Watari, until, one day, a girl changes everything. Kaori Miyazono, a pretty, free-spirited violinist whose playing style reflects her personality, helps Kousei return to the music world and shows that it should be free and mold breaking unlike the structured and rigid style Kousei was used to.

Un jeune prodige du piano, Kousei Arima, devint célèbre parmi les musiciens de son âge. Après la mort de sa mère (qui était aussi son professeur de piano), son état mental fut altéré et il resta incapable de jouer à nouveau du piano, clamant qu'il n'entendait plus les notes, malgré son ouïe pourtant intacte.
Deux ans plus tard, Kousei ne s'est toujours pas remis à jouer et sa perception du monde est dénuée de couleur. Au fil du temps, il s'est habitué à la vie paisible de collégien qu'il mène avec ses amis, Tsubaki et Watari, jusqu'au jour où une jeune fille changea sa vie. Kaori Miyazono, une violoniste énergique et extravertie, reflet de son jeu au violon, va aider Kousei à retourner dans l'univers de la musique et lui montrer qu'il peut lui aussi être libre et sortir du cadre de de vie stricte et rigide dans lequel il s'était enfermé.
