India floods and mudslides kill more than 100, many missing or trapped | DW News

Heavy flooding is affecting parts of India. The death toll from days of monsoon rains and landslides has now topped one-hundred. With many people missing and feared trapped, rescue operations are underway in the badly affected western state of Maharashtra, which includes the commercial hub of Mumbai. The region is reportedly experiencing its heaviest July rain in four decades. Red alerts have been issued for several parts of the state, with heavy rains forecast to continue.
The heavy monsoon rain across Maharashtra state has blocked roads, and trapped residents. In Raigad, a district south of Mumbai, dozens of people died when a landslide buried houses. Many residents are believed to still be trapped under the mud.
The scale of the devastation is not yet known, but the survivors' stories paint a harrowing picture.
Emergency crews have evacuated tens of thousands of people. Some have made it to temporary shelters as the water recedes. But India's weather bureau has now issued an alert for other regions, as heavy rain continues to fall.
