I've been wanting to try this Resident Evil 4 challenge for so long and in fact, I tried this "no merchant RE4" challenge a few weeks ago and failed miserably because I didn't have enough ammo for Salazar, so I thought I'd revisit it and see if I was good enough to complete it this time. Hello friends, my name is Dante and today, I had to let go of my boy, my best friend, the big daddy who coddled me and raised me to be the man I am today, the merchant. He always had the biggest guns in the industry, and no I’m not talking about those twigs, I’m talking about THESE twigs! So yes, you’ve come to the right place, Can you beat Resident Evil 4 Without the Merchant? Let’s find out baby.
Of course to begin our journey, we need to start a fresh new game on professional difficulty. If you don’t know what professional difficulty means, it’s basically the hardest difficulty you can choose in Resident Evil 4. Only RE4 professionals would understand this.
Ok really quick, let’s talk about why leaving the merchant behind and murdering him the moment I see him is bad for business and makes this challenge, challenging. The merchant does a few things for you: he sells you better weapons, he sells you upgrades for the weapons you already have, he sells scopes, stocks, first aid spray, and most importantly, he sells you bigger attache cases aka, bigger inventory cases. Now, because I can’t even talk to the guy, this means I can’t get any new weapons, I can’t get any bigger inventory cases, I can’t get any upgrades for the guns I DO get throughout the playthrough meaning that my guns are always going to be the absolute weakest they can be, and I’m stuck with only picking up weapons I can find myself on my adventure. There’s two weapons to be picked up along the way, a shotgun and a broken butterfly, and if I miss either one I’m pretty well screwed so I can’t forget them. And oh yeah there’s also a free rocket launcher in the castle too so that’s pretty epic.
Before jumping into it, let’s devise a quick little game plan. So first things first, we need to be using the knife as much as possible and saving every piece of ammo we can find. This will make boss fights easier or even possible, because no, you can’t just knife every boss to death in this game. You know what? Let’s go over my intricately planned and detailed list.
STEP 1: Castrate your enemies until they die from the pain. STEP 2: Save doggy. STEP 3: MORE CASTRATING. STEP 4: Create yet another burn victim to add to our list. And STEP 5: Don’t forget to do a flip or two to impress Ashley before escaping. As you can see, the list is very straightforward, detailed and easy to follow, so let’s just yeet ourselves into it.
Alright so the beginning wasn’t too hard, and that’s to be expected. You don’t meet the merchant until the next subchapter so gameplay for this part isn’t much different other than saving all of my ammo and using my knife on everything. I was doing my job the same way they taught me to do it in the academy: break into a man’s home without knocking, question him, and then murder him with a knife because he didn’t give me any useful information. I saved dogey to repent for my sins and I was on my way. For some reason I had a weird obsession to kill everything that moved. Well, except for the dozens of villagers and chainsaw guy of course.
