What Reagan Did When a Green Beret Was Declared Dead After Six Hours in Hell

On the second of May, 1968, an American doctor at a forward base in South Vietnam looked down at the body of a Green Beret who had just been carried off a helicopter. The soldier wasn't moving. His eyes were swollen shut with blood. His intestines were held in by nothing but his own hand. The doctor counted the wounds, found no signs of life, and reached for a body bag.
As the bag was being zipped shut, the soldier spat in the doctor's face.
His name was Roy Benavidez. He had just survived six hours of combat and thirty-seven wounds — and it would take the United States thirteen more years to give him the Medal of Honor he earned.
This is the verified story of Master Sergeant Roy Benavidez, the orphaned son of a Texas sharecropper who became one of the most decorated soldiers in American history.
This narrative is based on documented historical accounts, including Benavidez's official Medal of Honor citation, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society records, the National Museum of the United States Army, the Reagan Presidential Library ceremony record, and Eric Blehm's book Legend.

ACCURACY NOTES FOR THE VIEWERS

37 wounds / six hours — both confirmed by the CMOHS and the official citation. One secondary source said "28 holes".
Cambodia vs. Vietnam — the action was near Loc Ninh, just inside the Cambodian border region; some sources say Cambodia, some say "west of Loc Ninh, South Vietnam." The script says "near the Cambodian border" — the safe, accurate phrasi.
Reagan's quote — "If the story of Roy Benavidez were a movie script, you would not believe it" is verified and widely cited.
The body bag / spitting — confirmed across the citation narrative and multiple sources. Real.
The "dumb Mexican" taunt — from Benavidez's own autobiography and the Blehm biography. Authentic to his own account.
