Songs from the village 14 - Your darling is leaving

This simple song, sung by Barka Luketić, has possibly a far more complicated interpretation than it appears at first,

'Ode vaše lane
Na koje ste metali divane
Zbogom selo ode vaše lane
Na koje ste metali divane.'

'Your sweetheart is leaving the village about whom you talked.
Goodbye village your sweetheart is leaving about whom you spread rumours.'

The people in Bukovlje interpret this song quite literally, a person, someone's sweetheart, is leaving the village because this person is, perhaps, going to marry another or they are leaving because of rumours that had been spread about them. However, a close reading of the text came up with two different interpretations, one based on the 'villagers' understanding of the song that a person has been forced to leave the village because of the rumours but that the singer is now regretting their conduct in being party to this. The second interpretation is based on an alternative understanding of the language. Thus,
Metati = imati, to have or to place
Divane = pokrivač – meaning conversations, a blanket or quilt
Divan = imperial council / council of state
Divaniti = govoriti or razgovoriti

Some of these words have Turkish origin. Taking these alternative meanings into consideration the song could possibly mean that the 'village' is in disarray because the villagers no longer have a place for meeting and entertainment. This, therefore, signifies the decine of village culture and its customs.
