A weekend at Gatwick Airport / 1998 - 2000 / Classic Aviation Action!
What can I say about this video? It is definitive coverage of London's second airport in it's full heyday. Looking at this footage now (in 2018) , the scene from the old Gatwick viewing terrace looks more like the airliner graveyard at Victorville as it does now.
Aircraft piled up and stacked in so tight there is hardly anywhere to move! Only these planes aren't rusting or sitting waiting to be broken up, they are the real deal! Alive and active.
A perfect fusion of 1970's/80's and 90's jetliners all crammed into aviation heaven!
Of course there are early signs of the future with many of the older tri-jet's gone from the scene, replaced with newer Boeing 767's and 777's, but the classics are there.
Another thing to look out for is the increasingly restricted view offered from the viewing area, due to the South Terminal expansion.
My grateful thanks to my aviation friend Ian for filming these wonderful times, when Gatwick really was London's second major airport and not just a 'bigger brother' to London City! - Which is how Gatwick of 2018 feels with the loss of many of the larger US carriers which moved to Heathrow in 2008.
This video also contains some very nice footage from Luton Airport from 1998 and shows some Easyjet and Ryanair action, including some very rare footage of one of the leased Britannia Airbus A320's from Irish carrier TransAer!
