Iceland's Most Remote F-Road Drive: Kerlingarfjöll and the Kjölur Highland Route #iceland #roadtrip

Most Ring Road itineraries follow the coast. This one goes inland.

On Day 9, we drove Route F35 (the Kjölur highland road) into the central highlands before sunrise, crossing open volcanic plains, river valleys, and terrain that changes completely every few kilometers. The destination was Kerlingarfjöll and the Hveradalir Geothermal Area, one of Iceland's third-largest geothermal zones and one of its most visually distinctive highland landscapes.

The drive requires a 4x4 and should be treated as a full-day commitment. Weather in the highlands shifts fast, especially at elevation. We hit strong winds and snowfall by midday, which shaped how we planned the return.
