Imagine, we bought puts on AIG when it was trading at $60.50. Had you shorted the stock, you technically face unlimited risk with a huge upward move when faced to “buy to cover.”

However, we recommended buying puts costing $1.60/share, so that is your maximum loss per share. Period! And because the puts are so cheap relative to shorting a $60.50 stock, the returns were magnified: 47% in this case!
