It's a Mistake Bass Cover

Since a few people picked out the opening chords of this song at the end of my last cover, it seemed like the logical choice to upload. “It’s a Mistake” by Men at Work, off of their album, Cargo, which came out in 1983. The bass was played by John Rees who was often seen playing a Musicman Stingray and always played solid yet interesting bass lines.

Last year I posted a cover of “Overkill” off the same album and it did surprisingly well. I always wondered if the title was mistaken for a song by another band or something like that. I’m interested to see how this one does. Nothing bad to say about Men at Work, they had some great songs and ruled the airwaves for a few years back in the early 80’s. The band I was in back then did a number of Men at Work songs and had a pretty easy time getting them to sound good. I really love the guitar solo in this song too, especially the simple, descending, sliding line near the end. In fact, during the lead I was momentarily transported back in time, hearing my friend, Harry, playing it.

Not sure if I mentioned this before, but Lynn and I went to see a Colin Hay solo/acoustic show last year and he was fantastic. I figured I’d go to hear a few M@W songs and be content with that, but it was so much more. In fact, I only knew 3 or 4 of the songs he performed, yet I was thoroughly entertained for the entire show…and I’ve got a pretty short attention span. He’s a much better guitar player than I thought he’d be and his voice was incredible. His banter between songs was great as well, he seems to have a great personality and a great sense of humor.

Since as it looks like I did both songs in the same session, I’m playing the same bass, the Mid-80’s Ibanez Roadstar II RB750. This is nearly identical to the one I had in the Mid-80’s which I bought after really digging my RB850. This one is more of a P/J pick-up configuration and has a smoother tone. Since I didn’t play my old one very much, I had it converted into a fretless and then I played it even less than before before selling it off.
