Marin Mazzie, A Tribute (1960-2018) (05/24/2019)

This is a tribute to Broadway performer Marin Mazzie who passed from ovarian cancer on September 13, 2018 after dealing with the disease for over three years. Utilizing excerpts from live performances and interviews culled from her 20+ year career, this video was produced for possible use for her husband Jason Danieley, another Broadway performer, to use as an introduction at speaking engagements to introduce Marin to the audience and tell her story in her own words.

I made this video as a tribute to Broadway and concert performer Marin Mazzie. She is survived by her loving husband of twenty-one years and fellow Broadway performer, Jason Danieley.

Marin performed on Broadway in Passion (1994), Ragtime (1998), Kiss Me Kate (1999 revival), Man of La Mancha (2003 revival - replacement), Monty Python's Spamalot (2006 - replacement), Next to Normal (2010 - replacement), Bullets Over Broadway (2014), The King and I (2016 - replacement) and many more. Marin also played the mother in Carrie: The Musical (2012 off-Broadway), performed in Encores! productions of Kismet (2006) and Zorba (2015), and sang frequently on PBS and in many cabaret clubs such as 54 Below and concert venues.

She was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame for 2017, in a ceremony at the Gershwin Theatre held in November 2017. Marin received the first “Phyllis Newman Nothing Like a Dame Award” for her advocacy for OC awareness and other women’s health issues. In April 2019, it was announced that Marin would be the recipient of a posthumous Special Tony Award for her legacy as an advocate for women's health.

Pelvic exams to screen for ovarian cancer have not been shown to decrease the number of deaths from the disease. I'm hoping that Marin's story inspires women to be more aware of their body and promotes further research into the development of accurate screenings to catch the disease early.

Special thanks to WNET, Broadway.com, Playbill, Lincoln Center, WPIX, Metrofocus, 54 Below, and the producers of the Broadway shows in which Marin appeared for the rich array of source material sampled in this tribute. I didn't mean to infringe on any copyrights and am not monetizing this video. I am sure all of the organizations that own the footage contained herein (and available elsewhere on YouTube) would not have a problem with the material being used as a public service announcement about the dangers of ovarian cancer as well as paying tribute to one of Broadway's Great Ladies.
