Tesla Revealed Details of Roadrunner Battery Production
Tesla has applied for city government approval to build a battery production facility under the file name "Project Roadrunner." Based on the document submitted to the city government, Tesla wants to renovate and expand Tesla's Kato Road facility in Fremont, California, that houses the Roadrunner Project. The renovation and expansion will make room for battery manufacturing equipment and R&D space. Tesla Fremont Factory's Roadrunner Project indicates the electric carmaker has solved the battery bottleneck issue.
Based on the document submitted to the city government, Tesla wants to renovate and expand Tesla's Kato Road facility in Fremont, California, that houses the Roadrunner Project. The renovation and expansion will make room for battery manufacturing equipment and R&D space.
“To accommodate new battery manufacturing equipment and R&D space (known as ROADRUNNER), the Project proposes to construct an additional floor area of approximately 21,485 square feet at the second floor (covering a portion of the central space that is open to the second-floor roof – see Figure 4) and to add an additional, smaller approximately 8,260 square-foot third floor above (see Figure 5). These improvements will increase the total floor space of the existing Kato building by approximately 29,745 square feet (to a total of 156,057 square feet), but will not change the footprint of the building or its exterior facades (see Figure 6),” wrote Tesla in its application.
According to Reuters, Tesla estimated that work on the Kato Road building could be finished in 3 months. Assuming that the city government approves Tesla’s proposal in the next couple of weeks, the battery facility could be ready by September 15, the tentative date for the long-awaited Battery Day event. Many Tesla supporters are eager to attend Tesla's next big event because the company's million-mile battery is expected to be unveiled that day, along with other exciting tech improvements.
Tesmaniana reports that "Tesla's proposed Roadrunner Project supports the theory that the company has solved its battery bottleneck issue. Tesla needed to increase its battery capacity to produce its next line of vehicles, namely the Semi, Cybertruck, and Plaid series--which includes the Model S, Model X, Roadster 2.0, and the CYBRTRK.
"Rumors of a possible battery production line at the Fremont Factory circulated earlier this year. TSLA investor Gali Russell from HyperChange had found three job positions located in Fremont related to battery production earlier this year. Fremont was looking for a Cell Engineer for cell physics modeling as well as a Production Process Engineer and Controls Engineer for Tesla’s Pilot Line Cell Manufacturing."
