Composer: Jin Xiang |

Spanning more than 300,000 square miles, the Taklamakan desert is the largest desert in China and the world’s second largest shifting sand desert. It is often referred to as the ‘Sea of Death’ or the ‘Inescapable’ in the Uyghur language. Having lived in Xinjiang for two decades, the composer, Jin Xiang, developed a strong passion for its rich local culture, history and way of living, with the desert playing a huge part. The majesty and mystery of the desert mesmerized and deeply affected him as it highlighted the grandeur of life, the universe and society at large. These lasting impressions invoked waves of emotions, which were drawn upon heavily as inspiration behind the composition. The piece deftly interweaves moments of resplendence and quiet enigma to encapsulate the vastness and endlessness of the desert.
