Stuck At Intermediate: How To Escape The Intermediate Level
How to escape the Intermediate Level?
I hear this all the time! How to escape the Intermediate
level and make real improvements! If you are stuck at Intermediate, watch this video and learn my 5 suggestions to help you how to improve your English level.
When we start to study English we feel great improvements, because every expression we learn, every verb we learn make a big difference when we speak or write in English. As you make progress and reach an Intermediate level, small bites of information, new verbs or expressions we learn don’t make such a big impact anymore.
That’s when we start to have that strange feeling we are not moving forward. We make basic mistakes, we forget basic rules, we can talk about many things but at the same time we can’t really talk about many complex things.
Because of this, we start to lose momentum. English is not so fun anymore. We are not excited because we don’t feel a great difference. At the Intermediate level, we are learning complex grammar, well, actually, boring grammar. That’s when we start to lose focus. English is getting complicated, improvements are so small, you can’t express your opinions exactly the way you want to and you are still at Intermediate.
Can you get out of Intermediate and reach and Upper Intermediate or even an Advanced level? Yes, you can! Is it going to be fast? It depends, but from experience, I can tell you it is going to depend highly on your dedication.
I’m going to give you 5 suggestions of things I do with my pre-intermediate students to help them become strong intermediate speakers or even advanced ones.
Another important thing you need to understand is: are you really an intermediate speaker? Many people believe they are, but sometimes you aren’t one. These tips might help you become a real Intermediate speaker or become an advanced speaker.
So here we go
1. Time to pay more attention to small improvements – at this stage, improvements will be small and we have a tendency to neglect such small improvements. But you need to start paying attention to the small things you are learning.
When we are beginning we learn so many words and easily memorize them because they are related to very basic subjects. This won’t happen at the Intermediate level. You will also learn specific words, for specific conversations. You truly learn a word if you can remember it, but not just remember it, you gotta remember to use it!
2. Frequency you use different expressions, phrasal verbs – how often are you using expressions and phrasal verbs? As an Intermediate speaker, you should use them often. If you are not using them, it is time to do that. Sometimes, students understand the meaning of a phrasal verb, but don’t really use it. It is time to change that!
3. Grammar – There are people against it and people in favor. I’m in favor of balanced grammar studies. If you want to level up, it is time do more digging. Grammar is a good place to start. All you learned in Basic grammar is well very basic, there is more you need to know about simple present, simple past, simple future, believe me! That’s why you have to review these grammar points when you reach Intermediate.

4. Intonation and pronunciation – this is something I start working on with my beginners. Actually, every beginner should study intonation, but the truth is, most people don’t. Most people don’t practice intonation and pronunciation because it sounds complicated and it is not fun. You don’t feel like your English is improving by repeating words and reading a bunch of phonetic symbols or looking at yourself in the mirror and check if you are making the right movement to make the right sounds in English. I get it, it is boring. But that’s what’s going to help you get out of the intermediate level nightmare! Don’t take this exercise for granted. You need to listen to yourself, record your voice, compare to the original audio. You have to learn a little bit of intonation and pronunciation. You don’t need to become an expert, but it is gotta be there!
5. Complex subjects – it is time to make your brain work even harder. You need to prepare yourself for difficult situations. It is nice to talk about your weekend likes and dislikes, but challenge yourself. Prepare yourself for specific conversations, politics, global warming, science, law. I am not saying you need to study subjects you don’t like. But it is time to research about different subjects that will get you out of your English comfort zone. This is another thing I do with my Intermediate students. I make them talk about things they had never talked about. I ask them to watch videos about subjects they’d never watched or talked about before. That’s how you improve.
