Is the Shroud of Turin Real? The Evidence They Don't Want You to See
the Shroud of Turin.
It's a fourteen-foot-long linen cloth that bears the faint, ghostly image of a crucified man.
it’s the single most sacred artifact in Christianity: the authentic burial cloth of Jesus Christ.
miraculously imprinted with his image at the moment of Resurrection.
But when it first appeared in history, a bishop called it a fraud, a 'cunningly painted' fake.
This Bishop even claimed he knew the artist who made it?
in 14th-century France around the year 1354, this mysterious cloth appeared in the hands of a knight named Geoffroi de Charny, in the small town of Lirey.
It just seemed to appear out of nowhere.
Almost immediately, it was put on display, with many pilgrims making their way to look at this magnificent piece of Christian faith.
The local bishop named Henri de Poitiers, had second thoughts regarding this piece as to its authenticity and launched an investigation.
His successor, Bishop Pierre d'Arcis, in 1389 sent a letter to the Antipope Clement VII, claiming the Shroud wasn't a holy relic at all.
He wrote that it was a "cunningly painted" forgery, "a work of human skill and not miraculously wrought or bestowed."
d'Arcis also stated that his predecessor had not only exposed the fraud but had also found the artist who painted it.
However, the artist was never named, or identified.
the accusation being that the church in Lirey was knowingly running a scam.
Despite allegations from different sources the Shroud's popularity just kept growing.
Pope Clement VII, comprised allowing it to be displayed, not as the *true* shroud, but as a "figure or representation" of it.
But unfortunately with the authenticity of the shroud in doubt from the very beginning, the Shroud was marked by scandal.
