The battleship HMS Nelson passes beneath the Forth Bridge on her final journey to the scrapyard at Inverkeithing, Scotland on 16 March 1949...a striking sight of two engineering marvels in one frame.

Before towing, the scrapyards gas-torched the barrels while the ship was still laid up in the naval base.

The reason was practical...by destroying the barrels, the Navy could no longer reverse the decision and halt the scrapping!

The ship was effectively rendered useless, ensuring the process could proceed without delay.
