Jarvis, The Artly Barista Robot @ MUJI Atrium Toronto, Makes Me A Cappuccino

This installation is at MUJI Atrium, Toronto. On this occasion, a couple features weren’t working. Outside the window is the north end of Eaton Centre.

This isn’t just a coffee machine, designed from the ground up for a single purpose. This is an articulating arm, gripper, and camera, that needs to also manage resources, such as where is the portafilter and is it loaded? The robot works with existing consumer/commercial appliances (grinder, semiautomatic coffee maker, etc.), with a few concessions. For example, the steam wand is self-cleaning with a tailored mechanical device. There’s also probably some inverse kinematics at work so that the robot can reach its targets.

The cappuccino was satisfactory. But the robot was trying to perform latte art at the end only to have the cupholder fail to tilt. That is why some of the steamed milk got spilled. There was also an overhead projector that was supposed to tell me where my drink will be served. And, from what I’ve seen, it is more of a tech demo than a self-reliant automated machine; MUJI staff had to frequently provide manual interventions, including changing supplies, such as the matcha formulation.
