Electronic Literature - A Sign in Space Workshop
Zoom Workshop Recorded on June 9, 2023
Hosts: Scott Rettberg and Joseph Tabbi
This workshop is hosted by Professors Scott Rettberg and Joseph Tabbi of the Center for Digital Narrative will explore the potentialities of electronic literature (e-lit) for the reception and interpretation of extraterrestrial communication. The workshop includes inputs from three leading digital authors: Natalia Fedorova, Jason Nelson, and Rob Wittig. The workshop will conclude with the launch of a new “netprov” — a collectively written fiction that all workshop attendees can contribute to both during the workshop and after.
References:
•Prompt: Take a picture of an object or non-human living creature (plant or animal or insect etc) in a specific context. Then they should diagram that image or circle elements and add text directly on the image. That added layer of story and/or narrative (we might explain the different between story and narrative) would explore how their connection/relationship/understanding or use of that object or creature would change after the Signal is confirmed to be alien intelligence.
For example: Someone could take a picture of their bed. The added layer would describe how they'd move their bed to have a better view of the night sky through a skylight.
Or a picture of hiking shoes might focus on the soles. They might write how their shoes would quickly become worn because their expanded understanding of the universe would make them want to walk and explore more, taking night walks into areas with less light pollution.
Or perhaps a musician rethinks their piano keys with elements of the signal placed on the piano keys…..remapping their music.
They then submit two pictures at most, marked up, drawn on, with text placed on them, WITH GPS coordinates for each picture via. setidigitalnarrative@gmail.com
Deadline: July 9, 2023. Send responses to setidigitalnarrative@gmail.com or join us on Discord.
