Ronny Reich: "The Iron Age II Tombs from Mamillah, Jerusalem"

Abstract: This lecture will present the Iron Age tombs which were discovered during the rescue excavation conducted in the Mamillah region of Jerusalem before the area was handed over for development. The area is located adjacent to Jaffa Gate. Several intact tombs were encountered and excavated. Prof. Reich’s lecture will present the details of the tombs and their contents (pottery, figurines, stamp-seals etc.). The date of the cutting and use of the tombs, from the Iron Age II through the Hellenistic period, will also be discussed.

Bio: Prof. Ronny Reich is emeritus professor of classical archaeology at the University of Haifa. His last excavation in Jerusalem was in the City of David (1995-2010). He serves currently as the Chairperson of the Israel Exploration Society (est. 1913). Prof. Reich has authored over 200 scientific articles. His latest books include: Day by Day, Everyday Life of the Jewish Community in the Late Second Temple Period (2021; Hebrew); Stone Scale-Weights of the Late Second-Temple Period (2015); Miqwa'ot (Jewish Ritual Baths) in the Second Temple, Mishnaic and Talmudic Periods (2013; Hebrew); Excavating the City of David, Where Jerusalem's History Began (2011).
