Quick and easy fix for old cable line holes in wood floors.

Have old wood floors with random holes in them and wondering what they are—or what to do about them?
I ran into this while cleaning the floors in a turn-of-the-century jewel of a home for a new homeowner.

These holes are usually leftover from the old antenna and early cable TV days, when people drilled through the floor to run lines directly to the television instead of along the walls.

There are several ways to repair them, and some are expensive. You can replace the entire board, or install a matching wood plug and try to blend the grain, stain, and finish. The problem is most floor guys don’t keep exact replacement plugs sitting on the truck, so now you’re talking about sourcing wood, cutting plugs, staining, finishing, and additional labor costs.

One simple trick I use is keeping old wine corks on hand because they often fit these holes surprisingly well. You can tap them flush and stain them, or set them slightly below the surface and top them off with a matching prefinished filler like I did here.

Could this have been repaired another way? Absolutely.

I could probably name ten different methods.

But this approach gave the client a clean cosmetic repair without replacing boards, matched well with the existing prefinished floor, cost them nothing extra, and they were ecstatic with the result.
And at the end of the day, that’s what matters.
