Remembering Rajan Mishra Ji - English Interview | Recording Earth

It brings us great sadness to say goodbye to one of the Indian Classical Music legends we filmed in Varanasi for Kaashi Arts in 2016 (http://youtube.com/kaashiarts).

Pandit Rajan Mishra Ji was most famous for his singing duo with his brother, Pandit Sajan Mishra Ji, who said goodbye to him today along with his family. He was a guru to many and had a famous school in the mountains, which he talked about fondly, as we made tentative plans of one day visiting and filming.

To us, he was a phenomenal singer, a fountain of knowledge, a keeper of music, and a part of a 350-year-old musical lineage. In the evening, we filmed this interview twelve hours after we had been at a classical music festival at the Sankat Mochan temple. Rajan and Sajan Ji had headlined at 4 am and finished at 7 am. They sang a morning raga, which was awe-inspiring and refined. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/ZMt77uS-vTE.

After this interview, the brothers invited us to stay for dinner, and the family made a traditional Benarasi meal. I remember his infectious laughter sitting in the courtyard of their ancestral home, chewing paan.

Thank you for your time, your teachings, and your music.
